Wallsend Nurseries Community Gardens
In early Autumn registration for a garden plot was initiated and there was a huge response from the public. The result was that we cut up the old cottage garden bed in the upper part of the nursery into several smaller beds so that there would be room for everyone to enjoy a little vegetable gardening.
Keen gardeners were allocated a position of their own choice and gardening has commenced.
When we ran out of spaces, Unitanks came to the rescue and provided us with some of their excellent raised garden beds to use for vegetable production. These are a great way to garden if you have limited space, are physically handicapped or live in a unit. They are available in many shapes, sizes and colours to suit everyone. One great feature is the extra height of the garden bed which reduces bending whilst working on your green goodies.
Organic soil was donated by Burrell's Soils and Sands on Lake Rd Wallsend (49 559440) and we used this to fill in our raised garden beds.
Several beds both raised and in the old garden are now growing fresh vegies and herbs.
It will be exciting to see how well everyone does and what variety of vegetables are produced.
Some rules had to be drawn up of course and we have forbidden the throwing of fruits or vegetables at other gardeners, staff and customers among other things.
