PAW PAW

The   Paw Paw is a small to medium, soft stemmed (Pithy) tree that bears large crops of delicious fruit each year. It is a very fast grower but not long lived. Originating in South America it is regarded as a "tropical", but has long had pride of place in many New South Wales and Queensland coastal gardens. The fruit has in common with the Kiwi Fruit that it contains an enzyme which helps digest meat,

How long do they take to bear?

If you plant between November and January you will be picking your first crop between October and December of the following season.

Where can I grow a Paw Paw?

Because they are a "soft" type tree and susceptible to frost and chilly winds, they must be grown in a sheltered spot. An ideal spot is close to a north-facing wall or fence. This way they have the winter sun but are sheltered from cold winter winds, Good soil drainage is needed.

Do they need spraying?

Generally no, but it can be advisable to spray the crown thoroughly with wettable Sulphur twice in early winter two weeks apart as a prevention for mites and powdery mildew,

Do they need pruning?

No. If your Paw Paw grows very tall so that it is difficult to pick then they can be cut off to a more reasonable height, This should only be done in mid-summer.

How long do Paw Paw trees last?

Unlike other fruit trees the Paw Paws first and second and third year crops are generally the best. After this, size of crop and fruit diminishes. Serious Paw Paw growers generally replant or supplement their planting every year to two.

Why is the Paw Paw such a good home garden fruit ?

Because the tree is very compact and needs little room, The root-system is not a problem with pipes, walls, paths, etc, so can be planted close to any structure. It grows so fast in Summer that you can easily notice the difference every week.

When do you plant Paw Paw ?

The smaller the tree the more cold sensitive, so plant your Paw Paw only from beginning of November to the end of February. This way your tree will be reasonably mature before the colder months of June, July, August.

How do I Plant my Paw Paw?

  1. (1) Water well in pot before planting
  2. (2) Dig a l:arger size hole than the pot and mix in 1/3 bucket or fresh cow manure or any well rotted animal manure or compost.
  3. (3) Remove tree from pot and plant so that soil level is the same as in the pot
  4. (4) Water in well
  5. (5) Spread 1/2 kg Dolomite on ground around tree
  6. (6) Mulch around tree with straw or similar material to keep weeds down and soil surface moist

Aftercare - Keep well watered and fed during summer as Paw Paws are gross feeders and have the ability to grow very rapidly.
