GUAVA

The Guava

is a small semi- deciduous tree with attractive smooth bark and is native to tropical America. It has however been naturalized in many other parts of the world. There are many varieties of Guava with many different types of fruit, some good, some not so good.

At Yarrahapinni Nursery we have selected the varieties ALLAHABAD and the CHERRY GUAVA. Allahabad is a very large yellow skinned, white fleshed fruit with fewer seeds and better flavour and texture than the pink fleshed Guavas. The Cherry Guava is an evergreen shrub with dark shiny leaves and it produces masses of Walnut size flesh dark red flavorsome berries,

Are they frost hardy? - Yes, these Guavas will tolerate light frosts. They are also quite hardy to drought, wind, heat and salt air.

How long do they take to bear? - Both these types of Guavas will bear within a year of planting.

What time of year do they bear? - The Allahabad or White Guava bears in early to mid Winter and spreads its crop over about two to three months, The Cherry Guava bears two crops a year, one in early Summer and one in late Summer,

Where can I grow a Guava? - They will thrive in any type of soil from sand right through to clay soils, So any sunny position where you can fit it in is suitable, The Cherry Guava needs an area of about 2 metres across and White Guava or Allahabad needs at least 3 metres,

Do they need pruning? - Not as a rule but it is O.K.. to prune them to shape or size if desired. It is possible they may need thinning at a later age.

Do they need spraying? - Guavas are susceptible to fruit fly although the Allahabad variety is less susceptible because it bears most of its crop in Winter when it is generally too cold for fruit fly.

When do I plant a Guava? - Anytime of the year is O.K..

How do I plant my Guava?

  • 1. Water well in pot before planting
  • 2. Dig a hole larger than the pot size and work in 1/3 bucket of cow manure or well rotted poultry or other animal manure
  • 3. Remove bag from roots and place tree in hole. Fill around so that soil is at same level as in pot
  • 4. Make a small dam around tree to hold water
  • 5. Water in well
  • 6. Spread 1kg of Dolomite on ground around tree,
