Dichondra repens (Lawn substitute) |
Dichondra
repens, or kidney grass, (so called because of the shape of the leaves) is an attractive
and useful ground cover/lawn substitute, which will grow readily in most climates,
in fertile free draining soil, and full sun to up to 80% shade, and tolerate
some traffic. If dichondra is sown in a sunny condition, with medium traffic, it is a ground hugging, tight cover. In shadier conditions with less traffic it may reach 15cm.
Because mowing is not essential, it is useful for steep banks and other inaccessible positions. However, if required it can be mown 4 - 6 times a year. The 150 gram can of seed will sow 15 square metres of
dichondra. For optimum results, it is recommended that the seed be mixed with
a mild lawn starter fertilizer, and ideally sown into cover of 80% sand and 20% loam.
A thin cover of quality lawn top dressing should meet this requirement.
Broadcast the seed over the area, lightly rake, roll and water. The area must be kept moist at all times during germination.. The optimum time for sowing is from early Spring to late Autumn
