Aphelandra squarrosa (ZEBRA PLANT) |
| Description: This plant originates in central South
America. It has dark green leaves with main veins marked with white. During summer, autumn
and often well into winter it bears terminal pyramids of yellow bracts surrounding yellow
flowers. The stems are reddish pink. It is an evergreen. There are several varieties mainly compact in character and all bear the distinctive yellow flowers. Conditions: Aphelandra are best suited to an indoor house plant in Sydney. They like a warm, sunny room, high humidity, and good indirect light at all times. They should be kept just moist and well drained. If they are in a pot on a saucer, it is important that at no time should the saucer have water in it - this will cause the ends of the aphelandra leaves to go black, and the whole plant will collapse and rot. Aphelandra will grow outdoors in favorable conditions in Sydney, but will not tolerate extreme cold or frost. Care: Use a slow release fertilizer such as osmocote or nutricote. Pinch back the stems after flowering. |
